Chapter 2: The Name on the Note

I answered the call.
Frank's voice was tight.
"Daniel.
That missing shipment — it wasn't lost.
Someone rerouted it.
Pulled it off the manifest three days ago and had it redirected to a private cold-storage unit in Queens."
"Whose name is on the unit?"
Frank hesitated.
"That's the part you need to see for yourself."
I pulled up the transfer records on my laptop.
The authorization signature was there, clean and official.
It was mine.
Someone had used my credentials to move $400,000 worth of children's medication off the books.
I sat very still.
Then I heard Maya in the hallway — her soft footsteps, the sound of her setting something down outside my study door.
I opened it.
She looked up, startled.
Her eyes were red.
In her hands was a folded piece of paper.
"Mr.
Foster." Her voice barely held.
"I found this slipped under the staff entrance door tonight.
I don't know what it means.
But it has Lily's name on it."
I took the paper.
One line.
No signature.
*Tell your employer to stop asking questions, or the next shipment won't be the only thing that disappears.*
Maya didn't know what she was holding.
But I did.
Lily wasn't just sick.
She was leverage.
