Chapter 2: What Thomas Knew

Thomas didn't raise his voice.
He didn't have to.
He looked at Diane the way you look at someone you've run out of patience for.
Then he spoke clearly, so the entire room could hear.
"That dress belonged to Laura's grandmother.
She made it with her own hands during the war because she had nothing.
It has survived longer than our marriage has been happy.
And you will not mock it at my son's wedding."
The room went completely still.
Diane's face drained of color.
"Thomas, I was only—"
"I know exactly what you were doing." He didn't look away from her.
"I saw you come out of that bridal room, Diane.
Seventeen minutes before the ceremony."
My breath stopped.
Ryan reached for my hand under the table.
Diane's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Thomas set the microphone down slowly.
Then he reached into his jacket pocket and placed something flat on the table in front of her.
I couldn't see what it was from where I sat.
But Diane could.
She grabbed her purse.
She didn't say goodbye to Ryan.
She didn't look at me.
She walked straight out of the reception, and the doors swung shut behind her.
Thomas turned back to the room and raised his glass.
"To Laura and Ryan."
Everyone applauded.
But my eyes were still on that table.
What had Thomas put down?
And how long had he known?
