I stood in that locked room and almost laughed.
Because Derek had no idea what I'd just read on my phone.
The notification was from my lawyer.
Three words: *"It went through."*
Six months ago, before I ever walked down that aisle, I had quietly transferred every dollar of my inheritance into a private account Derek's name was never on.
Not one cent.
I had suspected something was wrong.
I just hadn't known how wrong.
Now I did.
I pulled the marriage certificate from my backpack and took a photo of it.
Sent it straight to my lawyer.
Then I walked calmly to the bedroom window.
The service entrance was directly below.
Twelve feet.
I'd worn flat shoes to the brunch.
I'd planned for this too.
I was halfway down when I heard Brenda's voice drifting from the dining room.
"She'll come back," Brenda said, laughing softly.
"They always come back when the money runs out."
"She has no money," Derek replied.
"I made sure of that before the wedding."
I froze on that ledge.
*Before the wedding.*
That meant this wasn't anger.
This wasn't impulse.
This had been the plan from the very beginning.
And somewhere in that house was proof — proof I hadn't found yet.
