I stood at that locked door for exactly three seconds.
Then I pulled out my phone and opened the notification that had stopped my heart upstairs.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
Six words.
*"I have everything.
Call me.
— R."*
My hands weren't shaking.
That surprised me.
I knew what "everything" meant.
I had suspected for four months.
But seeing it confirmed, on my wedding day, in that locked room — something inside me didn't break.
It hardened.
I called the number.
A woman answered on the first ring.
"Chloe," she said quietly.
"I'm Rebecca.
I was Derek's fiancée before you.
He doesn't know I kept the documents."
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
"What documents?"
"The property transfers.
The ones he made his last two girlfriends sign before he had them removed.
There's a lawyer's name on all of them." She paused.
"The same lawyer who drafted your prenup."
The room felt very small suddenly.
Downstairs, I could hear Brenda laughing.
"Rebecca," I said slowly.
"Where are you right now?"
She said one sentence that made me stand straight up.
